How can we help you?
At Thrive Counseling Center we strive to be transparent about the process of counseling.
We know that counseling is something that a lot of people feel hesitant to talk about, and resistant to share their experiences, which can lead to confusion and a lot of unknowns about the process. Especially if this is your first time considering working with a therapist.
Our goal is to demystify the counseling process and help you understand how counseling works.
Below are some of the most common questions we are asked and some answers to get you started. If you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to contact us by email, or give us a call.
General
This is a great question and an extremely important one! We are committed by law, and by our professional ethics code to not disclose any information about you to anyone without your permission. By permission, I mean that you actually have to come into the office and sign a Release of Information (ROI) if you ever wanted us to speak with someone on your behalf.
Protecting Privacy Is Extremely Important to Us
This means that even if someone were to call our office and ask if you were a client of ours, unless we have that ROI on file, we don’t know who you are and can’t even tell the caller if we’ve ever even met you before. We take protecting your privacy extremely seriously.
How We Bill Insurance in Federal Way
If you are interested in having us bill your insurance, you will need to sign our initial paperwork giving us permission to share some of your information with the insurance company. Some of the information that you are giving permission to share are things like your medical/psychiatric diagnosis, as well as occasional treatment planning records and/or progress reports. Unfortunately, the insurance companies will not cover services without this information. In the past, a medical record had big implications serving as documentation of pre-existing conditions that excluded many from getting health insurance. Although the current health insurance system does not allow for exclusions for pre-existing conditions, we do not know if this will continue on infinitely. Some of our clients do choose to completely protect their privacy by paying privately (out of pocket) in order to keep their session details entirely confidential. We leave this up to you and are happy to discuss this further with you if you have additional questions.
HIPAA Compliant System
We are extremely proud to run an office that utilizes the best of cutting-edge technology to give you the best experience in working with us while not compromising your privacy and the integrity of your trust in us. We have gone to extra lengths to make sure that EVERY system we use is HIPAA compliant (the standard the government sets for requirements for protecting sensitive patient/client data). Our staff has received training in HIPAA compliance, our software programs are all HIPAA compliant, and our IT department has specialized HIPAA compliance certifications. This boils down to an extremely secure experience for you coming in to see us, whether you come into our Federal Way office or meet with us virtually.
When starting counseling in Federal Way, we typically go for 55 minutes. This allows the counselor an opportunity to get to know the situation and help you feel more relaxed. This timeframe is designed for your comfort and allows you to talk freely and build a rapport with your counselor.
However, in working with couples and some individuals, we sometimes find that longer sessions can be helpful (1.5-2 hours) to really dive into the places you are getting stuck in a productive way. You may also find that a shorter session is best. However, if you know that you would like to schedule an hour and a half for a session, you can do so by giving us a call or by sending us an email.
Customizing your sessions to meet your needs is very important to us.
In some cases, if we are working with young children, we will do abbreviated 40-minute sessions, which tend to work well and hold their attention.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of psychotherapy that encourages individuals to embrace their thoughts and feelings instead of feeling guilty about them or fighting them. The primary objective of ACT is not to eliminate complicated feelings but to transform our relationship with these feelings and help us move toward a more valued, fulfilling life.
How ACT Works
ACT uses mindfulness and acceptance strategies to develop psychological flexibility and help you become aware of and make contact with your experiences. It facilitates you to identify your values, which act as a compass for your actions. Individuals can lead a rich and meaningful life by committing to behavior aligned with these values, even in the presence of challenging thoughts or feelings.
In ACT, there's an emphasis on "experiential exercises" rather than traditional "talk therapy." These exercises help you explore your experiences from a new perspective, fostering self-acceptance and emotional agility.

Individual Counseling
This is one of the most common questions we are asked. Your goals will primarily determine the length or number of sessions of counseling in Federal Way. Some goals take longer than others to achieve.
Let’s see if we can break it down for you a little more…
The patterns or dynamics you are struggling with now didn’t happen overnight. Chances are you have been feeling this way for some time, or have struggled with a challenge for a while.
It doesn’t take as long to discover new options and heal as it took to get to where you are now, but we can’t change everything in a week or two.
Number of Counseling Sessions in Federal Way
Typically, we will recommend a minimum investment of 6-8 sessions to really make headway with what you are struggling with. After that, we continue for as long as counseling at our Federal Way office feels useful in helping you meet your goals.

Have more questions about if counseling might be helpful for you? Please give us a call at 206-567-7267, or send us an email. We are always happy and determined to help you reach your goals, and we welcome any questions you may have.
Are you ready to begin?
Most of our clients will start off by meeting with their therapist once a week.
In our experience starting off by coming in once a week is the most effective frequency in order to get the best results from counseling. Starting off with meetings that are less frequent means slower progress, and backtracking in between sessions.
It’s likely that it took a while to get to the place where you are right now. While it doesn’t need to take as long to get out of it, it does require consistency in doing and understanding things differently for the shifts to really stick.
Amount of Counseling Sessions Varies
While we usually start off with weekly sessions, it is our goal to not keep you in counseling forever. Some of our clients work with us under a more brief therapy model (6-12 therapy sessions). Some of our clients who are facing bigger challenges will work with us for 6 months to a year. Some of our clients chose to continue to work with us over the course of several years. We are here to support you for as long as it feels helpful.
As you progress with your licensed therapist towards your goals, it is common to decrease to meeting every other week, or perhaps once a month. We even have clients who come in for quarterly or yearly check-ins as part of the maintenance of their emotional, psychological, and relational health. We do this with every other part of our systems (and even our cars!), so why wouldn’t we take the time to invest in taking some time to check up on our emotional and relational health?

Take a look through our providers, and see who you feel most connected to based on either their description, their background and experience, or their picture.

Find the Therapist Who Fits Your Needs
If you are still unsure, or looking through and making the decision feels overwhelming, you can also give our office a call or send us an email and we can match you with the therapist who we feel will be the best fit for your needs.
Time and time again, research on the effectiveness of counseling and therapy shows that a strong alliance and positive relationship with your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of you having success meeting your goals in counseling. In other words, you have to feel a connection with your therapist for this to work.
No matter what the background, experience, or specialization areas of a provider….if you don’t click with your therapist, it’s a waste of your time, energy, and money.

Grief counseling is a therapeutic approach that helps individuals navigate emotional turmoil and grief, typically after losing a loved one. It focuses on acknowledging and expressing feelings, understanding the grieving process, and finding healthy coping methods.
At Thrive Counseling Center, our trained therapists provide a safe, supportive environment and guide you to explore your feelings of loss and learn strategies to support healing.
Signs You Might Need to See a Grief Counselor
Grief can manifest in various ways, and it's essential to understand when you might need professional help with grief. Here are a few signs that may suggest it's time to seek grief counseling:
- Persistent feelings of sadness and despair: It's natural to feel sad after a loss, but if your sorrow is unrelenting and you can't seem to find joy or pleasure in anything, it might be time to seek help.
- Difficulty performing daily tasks: If grief is preventing you from functioning normally—like keeping up with your job, maintaining personal hygiene, or managing everyday responsibilities—it's advisable to consult a grief counselor.
- Isolation from loved ones: If you continuously withdraw from social activities or feel disconnected from people you care about, grief counseling can provide a supportive space to express your feelings.
- Physical symptoms: Unresolved grief can manifest physically, causing symptoms like insomnia, weight changes, or unexplained aches and pains.
- Feelings of guilt or anger: If you're experiencing persistent guilt or anger related to the loss, it's beneficial to seek professional assistance to work through these complex emotions.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a specialized therapy approach that focuses on restructuring unhelpful, unhealthy, and untrue thoughts.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) aims to help individuals in counseling identify how their actions, thoughts, and emotions intertwine and how these aspects can greatly affect how they feel about themselves and the world around them.
How does CBT work?
CBT is incredibly popular with therapists around the world. The root of this behavioral therapy is to recognize unhelpful behavior patterns—because when we learn to change our negative thoughts and challenge untrue assumptions, we become happier and improve our quality of life.
CBT is a form of “talking therapy” where an individual works one-on-one with a counselor to change behaviors and thought patterns. CBT does not typically focus on the past or previous life traumas—rather, it seeks to help the individual move forward and have more hope about the future.
What types of problems can CBT help with or improve?
Cognitive-behavioral therapy in Federal Way can help you if you’re struggling with any of the following:
- Negative “self-talk” or habitually being unkind to yourself
- Generalized anxiety
- OCD
- Relationship problems
- Insomnia
- Eating disorders
- Depression

- Work-related stress

Here’s the thing, it’s likely that the secret you are thinking about is part of what’s getting in the way of you both feeling connected and on the same page in your relationship.
We will discuss with you in the first session (if you are coming in as a couple) that we can’t do our job effectively if we are put in the role of secret-keepers throughout your counseling with us.
That being said, if there is a secret that you are holding that you are fearful of disclosing to your partner, counseling is a really good venue to get the support you need to share the secret.
Chances are, it’s going to come to light eventually.
How Counseling Can Help
Counseling can often help minimize the fallout, and help you share in the most productive way possible.
With the help of your therapist, you can disclose what’s going on for you in a way that has the potential to bring you both closer together instead of drive you apart. We respect how hard this process is, and certainly would work with you before we did a disclosure session with the two of you.

Child and Teen Counseling
Supporting your child during therapy is crucial for their emotional well-being and overall success in treatment. As a parent, your understanding, encouragement, and involvement play a vital role in helping your child navigate this process.
Children's Therapy in Federal Way
Here are some suggestions for how you can best support your child when they are in therapy:
- Encourage open communication. Let your child know it's okay to talk about their emotions and that you're there to listen without judgment.
- Stay involved. Be active in your child's therapy by attending sessions when appropriate, staying informed about their progress, and collaborating with the therapist.

- Provide a stable home environment. Create a nurturing and stable home environment that promotes emotional well-being. Encourage healthy routines, such as regular sleep schedules, balanced meals, and physical activities, to support their mental health.
- Be patient. Understand that progress in therapy takes time, and every child's journey is unique. Celebrate their achievements, and let them know you're proud of their efforts.
- Educate yourself. Learn about your child's mental health challenges and the therapy process to help you better understand and empathize with your child.

When introducing your child to counseling, whether in Tacoma, Kent or through an online platform, it's important to demystify what happens during therapy sessions. We recommend explaining that the therapist's office is a safe space where your child can express their feelings and thoughts openly.
For in-person visits, describe the welcoming environment they'll encounter, highlighting that it's designed to make them feel comfortable and secure. If opting for online counseling, reassure them that it's just like a video call where they can talk and maybe even show their favorite toys or drawings to the therapist.
Framing Counseling in a Positive Light

Child counseling serves as a crucial support system, offering guidance, stability, and emotional coping skills that can benefit children throughout their development.
Here are some benefits:
- Emotional Support and Understanding — Child counseling offers a safe space for children to express their feelings and thoughts without judgment. A child counselor can provide the empathetic listening and understanding that children need to feel valued and heard. This emotional support is crucial as children develop their self-esteem and learn to process their emotions constructively.
- Strategies for Managing Emotional Challenges — Children, like adults, face stress, anxiety, and various emotional challenges. Counselors equip them with practical strategies to manage these feelings effectively. Techniques might include mindfulness exercises, cognitive behavioral strategies, or simple breathing exercises, all tailored to be age-appropriate and engaging.
- Support Through Life Transitions — Whether starting a new school, dealing with family issues, or moving to a new home, transitions can be stressful for children. A child counselor helps them navigate these changes by providing stability and tools to adjust healthily and positively.

Our licensed counselors at Thrive Counseling in Federal Way practice various approaches to therapy, including attachment-focused therapy.
Developed by British psychologist John Bowlby in the 1960s, attachment-based therapy focuses on building or rebuilding a supportive, trusting relationship to prevent or treat depression or anxiety.
Attachment-Focused Therapy Explained
Essentially, an attachment-based approach explores the link between a child's early attachment experiences with a primary caregiver—or primary caregivers—and the child’s ability to create emotionally and physically healthy relationships.
A primary caregiver is necessary for a child’s life. It provides the support and security a child needs to explore, learn from new experiences, interact with their environment, and connect with others. Forming a trusting relationship with a parental figure or therapist can help a client form strong bonds in other relationships in their life. Attachment-focused therapy can be used in combination with other forms of counseling.

- Fear and phobias
- Coping with grief
- Work-related stress

- Educate yourself. Learn about your child's mental health challenges and the therapy process to help you better understand and empathize with your child.

During family therapy, licensed family therapists meet with every family member, including children, to help address issues that one or more family members are facing.
Family Therapy in Federal Way
Family therapy seeks to treat an individual's problems or concerns by looking at how that individual fits into a larger family unit and how the structure, communication, and dynamics within that unit influence and affect the individual.
The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy describes how an individual attending therapy is also embedded in larger, more complex family relationships. For this reason, many family therapists in Federal Way will choose to incorporate family therapy as part of an individual’s unique treatment plan in addition to maintaining individual therapy sessions.
Family Counseling Sessions
Traditionally, a family will participate in fewer therapy sessions overall than a single individual does. Because these group counseling sessions are more brief and specific than “classic” one-on-one therapy, it’s often easier to get to the root of problems and achieve solutions more quickly.
At Thrive Counseling Center, we offer family counseling in addition to parenting support and couples counseling. No matter your family unit's needs, we can help you grow stronger and closer together by working with our licensed family therapists in Auburn, WA.
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by your child’s behaviors or by your responsibilities as a parent? If so, you are not alone.

- Working alongside your spouse or partner to parent equally between you

Supporting Neurodiversity: Adults
Absolutely! At Thrive Counseling Center, we work hard to provide much-needed support to neurodiverse adults and their families. For many neurodiverse adults who are in a romantic relationship, this also means offering couples counseling.

Our counselors understand this, and we choose to offer neurodiverse couples therapy in Federal Way and online for people who want to strengthen their communication skills and have healthier, happier relationships.
If you, your partner, or both of you identify as neurodiverse, there is a place for you here in our counseling office.

Workplaces can be challenging, especially for neurodiverse adults who may experience difficulties with communication, sensory overload, or time management. Therapy provides a supportive space to develop skills and strategies for thriving in a professional setting.
4 Ways Therapy Can Help You at Work
- Requesting Accommodations — A therapist can help you identify your needs and communicate them effectively to your employer. We believe this can help you get the right support for success.
- Managing Workplace Dynamics — Therapy can help you develop strategies for better workplace relationships. Our therapists can help you navigate office politics, handle miscommunications, and much more.
- Coping with Sensory Overload — Loud environments, bright lights, or overwhelming stimuli can be tough. Your Federal Way therapist can help you develop grounding techniques and coping strategies to manage sensory challenges.

Challenges Neurodiverse Individuals Face
Because living in a largely neurotypical society can be challenging to those with neurodiverse minds, our team of counseling professionals works hard to develop treatment and coping strategies to help neurodiverse individuals navigate the complexities of life. We accomplish this by focusing our therapies on common areas of concern such as romantic relationships, friendships, independent living, and the workplace.
Our goal is that our counseling for neurodiverse adults will help those individuals feel:
- Supported
- Confident
- Educated
- Capable
- Trusted
- Respected
We offer therapy sessions both for neurodiverse adults and their loved ones so that everyone can gain a better understanding of neurodiversity and come to truly appreciate the role it plays in their relationships.
Working with Families of Neurodiverse Individuals
We work with families, couples, friends, and parents who want to improve the way they communicate and learn more about how neurodiverse adults view the world. We teach those with neurodiversity how to more effectively engage with other members of society and how to improve the quality of their interactions with their peers.
Because we celebrate neurodiversity and see it as a gift, we offer counseling from a unique perspective that helps strengthen neurodiverse relationships.

Supporting Neurodiversity: Kids and Teens
In the counseling world, we often use the term “neurodiverse.” Neurodiversity refers to situations where brains respond differently to information and stimuli than the average “typical” brain. Neurodiverse people respond to and interact with the world around them in a nontraditional way that other people might see as strange or even inappropriate.
Neurodiversity can be especially difficult for children who are trying to figure out their place in the world and how to best interact with their peers. Common neurodiverse conditions include Autism, Asperger’s, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, ADD and ADHD, learning disabilities, and speech disorders.
Benefits of Neurodiversity Counseling
Are you searching for counseling for a neurodiverse child in Federal Way? At Thrive Counseling Center, our trained therapists work with neurodiverse children to help them develop social skills that strengthen their interactions and relationships with others. Neurodiverse children often fail to pick up on social cues or to know how to act in group settings, which can make other children feel uncomfortable.
Our caring counselors understand the significant challenges that neurodiverse children face. Adjusting to social norms and developing “acceptable” social behaviors is hard even for neurotypical children. For this reason, we take our time with our neurodiverse clients and slowly tackle issues one at a time.
Neurodiverse children often feel overwhelmed in standard social settings. Individual and family counseling sessions offer a safe space where these children can openly share their feelings and work through their struggles. Our therapists understand how to work with neurodiverse brains and will target specific problem areas with your child.

Our licensed therapists can help neurodiverse children reach their full potential through destigmatization, inclusion, and targeted therapies. We give neurodiverse children the opportunity to express themselves and their needs.
